So what is the medical definition of menopause?
Menopause is a biological process in which a woman's menstrual cycles permanently end and her fertility capacity naturally ceases. The hormone estrogen is secreted from the egg follicles in the ovaries. As the egg cells in our ovaries are used up every month during menstrual periods, the production of estrogen in the body decreases when we reach the age of menopause. Menopause-related complaints are usually symptoms related to the decrease in estrogen and progesterone hormones secreted from the ovaries.
The average age of menopause in our country is 47-48 years. As an age range, the menopause period is entered between the ages of 45-55.
In order to be called full menopause, a woman must not menstruate for 12 consecutive months.
Before menopause, there is a transition period called perimenopause. This period is characterized by hormonal changes and irregular menstrual cycles.
