A hysterogram, also called an hsg film, is a radiographic examination of the inside of the uterus and fallopian tubes using a contrast medium. Hsg is a radiologic imaging method used to evaluate the internal structure of the uterus and fallopian tubes (salpinges).

WHY IS HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAPHY?

It is usually used to see whether the fallopian tubes are partially or completely blocked. Doctors can also examine the size and shape of the inside of the uterus with this method.

WHY IS HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAPHY?

The tubes must be open for pregnancy to occur. The tubes must be open, not closed, so that sperm and egg can meet and fertilization can take place.

Since the tubes are very thin organs, it is not possible to tell by ultrasonography whether they are open or not. Some adhesions that can form in the uterus cannot be detected by ultrasonography.

Therefore, one of the most important infertility diagnostic tests is the uterine film HSG.

It is usually used to see whether the fallopian tubes are partially or completely blocked.

If the tubes are blocked in the HSG, it is not possible to conceive naturally. It is possible to conceive with in vitro fertilization.

HOW IS HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAPHY?

The uterine X-ray is performed within a few days after the end of the patient's menstrual period, when the uterus is bleeding the least. The woman is prepared for the procedure by lying in the gynecological examination position. The doctor inserts a speculum into the cervix and then a catheter is advanced through the uterine canal into the uterus.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAPHY?

There are some risks associated with a uterine film. However, it is generally considered a safe procedure. One of the most common risks is the possibility of an allergic reaction to the contrast material used. There is also the possibility of infection during the procedure and, in very rare cases, minor injury to the uterus.

WHAT SHOULD WE PAY ATTENTION TO AFTER THE HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAPHY?

Sexual intercourse should be avoided for the first few days after the procedure. Pain may be experienced for a few days after the procedure and care should be taken especially on the first day.

Minor bleeding may occur after the uterine X-ray. Bleeding continues for a few days and ends.

WHEN IS INTERCOURSE POSSIBLE AFTER A HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAPHY?

Uterine film is a procedure that is taken with medication and causes pain and aches, especially after the procedure, even if not during the procedure. Therefore, gynecologists recommend not having sexual intercourse for at least two days, but not until the uterine pain is completely gone.

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE BEFORE THE HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAPHY?

There is nothing to pay particular attention to before the uterine X-ray. No fasting is required. If it will be taken on the appropriate schedule, there are no relationship restrictions. It is good to take a bath in the evening or morning before the examination.

CAN A HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAPHY BE TAKEN UNDER ANESTHESIA?

HSG is now performed in most hospitals with a new generation uterine film device with a C-arm detector. With this new system, anesthesia is not required during the procedure as the patient experiences less pain and suffering. In procedures using a catheter device, pain and soreness are felt more.

Is there a prohibition of intercourse after HSG?

3 days sexual abstinence is recommended.
