WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF URINARY INCONTINENCE
Causes of Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence is a condition characterised by involuntary loss of urine that can affect people of all ages. It can be an embarrassing problem that often affects a person's social life and can significantly affect the quality of daily life.
There are many different causes of urinary incontinence. The most common causes are as follows:
Stress urinary incontinence: This means urinary incontinence during activities that increase intra-abdominal pressure, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing or lifting heavy loads. This type of urinary incontinence is usually caused by an anatomical disorder of the pelvic floor muscles.
Urge urinary incontinence (Urge): Sudden and strong need to urinate before reaching the toilet and urinary incontinence. Bladder overactivity or sensory nerve damage in the bladder may play a role in this type.
Mixed urinary incontinence: This is a combination of both stress and urge incontinence.
- Bladder or urinary tract infections: Infections can cause the bladder muscles to become overactive and cause urinary incontinence.
- Obesity: Excess weight can increase the risk of urinary incontinence by putting excessive pressure on the pelvic muscles.
- Advanced age: As we age, pelvic muscles weaken and bladder capacity decreases.
- Pregnancy and childbirth: During childbirth, the pelvic muscles may tense and increase the risk of urinary incontinence. During pregnancy, as the foetus grows, the pressure on the bladder increases and urinary incontinence is common.
